Flies
The fly is a common pest that can be found everywhere. In large numbers, flies can be very annoying to both humans and animals. They can transmit more than 20 human and animal diseases. Typhoid fever, amoebic dysentery, tuberculosis, mastitis, pinkeye, anthrax, cholera, salmonella and Newcastle disease are some of the diseases that can be transmitted by flies.
Biology of the House Fly
The adult house fly is 1/4 inch long and gray in color, with a lighter abdomen and four stripes behind its head. The underside of the male is yellowish. The larvae are worm-like maggots, and the pupae are 1/3 inch long and dark brown. The house fly undergoes a complete metamorphosis, from egg to larvae, larvae to pupae and pupae to adult. This life cycle can be completed in just two weeks in warm weather, or seven weeks in cooler weather. One female house fly can lay nearly 1,000 eggs over a lifetime.
Fly Control
Proper sanitation is the best non-chemical approach to fly control as it eliminates their breeding area. Take out trash frequently to covered containers located preferably away from the home. Always use trash bags. and keep trash containers clean and dry. Pick up pet manure frequently since it is a choice breeding spot for flies.
We offer several different kinds of fly control products to suit your needs, from baits to fly catchers. These products are the best available and will take care of your fly problems.

Victor Window Fly Trap Best used for:
Eliminating Traps, Baits & Sticky Paper.
The Window Fly Trap is a transparent strip of sticky paper that contains glue with a natural attractant.
Musca-Cide is a very effective fly bait. It contains Trioclure, a powerful sex attractant, and the potent and fast-acting active ingredient methomyl. Controls house flies, blow flies, little houseflies, flesh flies and eye gnats. A very economical choice.
Quick Strike Fly Abatement Strip
- The active ingredient, nithiazine, kills nuisance flies within seconds after feeding.
- Triple-attraction formula with two feeding attractants and a fly sex pheromone.
- Up to eight weeks of consistent control.
- For outdoor use near fly feeding areas, or in partially enclosed areas, such as loading docks and parking garages.
How it works
Nuisance flies are drawn to the strip by a triple-action attractant. After flies locate the device, they explore the
surface, then begin feeding. The active ingredient, nithiazine, enhances the fly's nerve functions, causing uncontrolled
movement. Flies die within seconds after they begin feeding.
To help QuikStrike work its best, keep these tips in mind:
- QuikStrike strips can be placed in any position, but vertical placement is best. When attaching to a vertical
surface, use heavy-duty tape or Hercules Putty™ to facilitate placement.
- When possible, expose both sides of the strip to flies. You can also place QuikStrike with only one side exposed.
- Try to place QuikStrike in protected areas, since moisture and sunlight can reduce the residual length. To create
a protected location, hang the strip inside a tall, inverted, five-gallon bucket with three sides removed.
- Place QuikStrike near the ground where flies feed. Placement higher than three feet is not recommended, since flies
at this level are resting, not feeding.
- QuikStrike works best in medium-to-high fly populations. In low populations, it might appear as though flies are not
being controlled. In fact, it may only be taking longer due to alternative food supplies.
Application Sites
Choose QuikStrike for immediate control of nuisance flies in these locations: Loading Docks, Parking Garages, Dumpsters,
Stables, Kennels, Aviaries, Refuge and Recycling Facilities, Dairy Barns, Poultry Houses, And other areas where flies are
a nuisance.

Golden Malrin Fly Bait's two-phase action knocks out nuisance flies quickly and effectively. First, Muscamone® fly attractant draws flies in. Then, as they feed

Stimukil Fly Bait contains more powerful sex attractant for
flies than other competing brands. The special homogenized formulation aids in
long lasting fly control.
Maxforce Fly Bait Kills Flies for up to 30 Days - Flies have met
their match with new Maxforce Granular Fly Bait from Bayer Environmental
Science. The latest addition to the Maxforce lineup kills flies in 60 seconds
and lasts up to 30 days. "Two powerful attractants combined with the
non-repellent active ingredient Imidacloprid makes Maxforce Fly Bait Simply
Irresistible" says Gordon Morrison, marketing manager for the new fly bait. "Imidacloprid
is very effective against flies, even those resistant to OP and Carbamate
insecticides" continues Morrison, "And because all the components of the bait
matrix are evenly distributed throughout the bait, the product remains
attractive and effective for long periods of time." Maxforce Fly Bait also
contains Bitrex bittering agent to help prevent accidental ingestion by
non-target animals.

Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are one stubborn
problem for restaurants, food service establishments, and bars. Those are the little flies that you see in and around the
food serving areas, bar areas, dining areas and kitchens. Fruit flies as their name suggests, like to breed in
fruits, syrups, vegetables, and other decaying organic matter. No matter where they breed, these pests are constant
companions where food is handled, produced and stored. Adult flies can end up in the most frustrating places such as liquor
bottle spouts, entrees, drinks, and anywhere else the health inspector wants to look.
Now that you know a bit about what’s “buggin” you, how do you get rid of them? Controlling these pests is not a complicated
matter but can be a frustrating one. Fruit flies can breed in just a little bit of “gunk”, so locating and
treating areas that are prone to collect food is a must. These critters can multiply in a short period of time and can
become a large problem.
Insecticides
One of the first steps when controlling fruit flies is sanitation. Fruit flies can breed in
the smallest most inconspicuous areas. Locating where food, syrup, and mixers collect is a good starting point. Sanitation
of bar areas, serving areas, and drains should be part of a regular maintenance schedule. Sealing cracks and voids that
collect food and other organic debris is a way to eliminate places where these flies can breed.
Once the hard part of sanitation and caulking is complete, the next step is to use a product that controls the larval
stages of these pests. Controlling the larval stages is key to preventing the adults from ending up in all the wrong places.
The product of choice for controlling fruit fly larvae is GENTROL. GENTROL contains an Insect Growth Regulator, (ICR) which
prevents the larvae from ever becoming adults. No adults, no problem.
GENTROL can be applied in food serving areas, bars, drains, restrooms, kitchens and other areas where flies breed. Here are
some tips on how to use GENTROL IGR effectively.
1. Apply GENTROL to suspected areas of fruit fly breeding, as discussed earlier, fruit flies breed where food
and syrups collect.
2. For fruit flies, treat areas under sinks, cracks, wall voids, equipment and other areas where food may collect. Target
the areas that are hardest to clean; these areas generally are where flies
breed. Apply GENTROL once a week for a month and then drop back to a 2-4 weeks schedule depending on the amount of
flies that are seen. Again, in areas that receive a lot of water more frequent applications may be necessary.
3. The best time to treat is after closing and after all the cleaning has been done. Let the GENTROL application be the
last thing you do before you leave for the night. For those places that never close, make the applications during the
slowest part of the day or night.
4. To control adults that are already in the building, use an aerosol product for flying insect control that contains
pyrethrins, and is labeled for use in food service areas. Treat for the adults at the same time you use the GENTROL, which
is the last thing you do before leaving.

Retail package of two decorative, inconspicuous traps designed to discreetly capture the fruit
flies that contaminate fruits & vegetables in your home. These effective, non-toxic traps kill fruit flies so they cannot
reproduce. Dead flies remain out of sight inside the decorative container, which is similar in appearance to a spice jar
and blends in with kitchen or dining room decor. Lure gives off a mild, pleasant, fruity odor that attracts fruit flies
into the disposable jar where they become trapped and drown. Use trap near fruit bowls, indoor garbage cans or those places
where kitchen scraps are kept. Each disposable trap will work up to six weeks under normal conditions. Completely safe for
use around food products.
New style trap for fruit flies. It can be placed on any flat surface surface or attached to a
vertical surface with the supplied adhesive tape and placed in areas that have fruits, vegetables, syrups, soda and other
materials that produce fermenting odors. Case contains 12 bottles and 12 cardboard holders with adhesive back.
Drain Flies
Drain flies sometimes appear suddenly and
mysteriously, becoming a nuisance in both homes and sewage disposal plants.
Adult flies may become so numerous indoors that they congregate at windows,
darken lamp shades at night, fall into food and accumulate around showers,
bathtubs, sinks and floor drains, especially in the basement. Outdoors they mar
fresh paint and plug sewage filter beds (intakes and drains), getting into the
eyes, ears and nose of people in the area. Bronchial asthma can be caused by
inhaling fragments and dust of dead flies. Since these flies originate in filthy
conditions, there is the possibility of human health disease transmission.
Identification
Adult drain flies are tiny (1/5 to 1/6 inch long), fuzzy, dark or grayish
insects with the body and wings densely covered with hairs. The antennae are
long (13 segments), with each segment having a "bulbous swelling" with a whorl
of long hairs. Wings, appearing too large for the body, are held roof-like over
the body when at rest, giving a mothlike appearance. They are weak fliers and
make irregular, hesitating flights covering only a few feet in short, jerky
lines. Eggs are tiny, brown or cream-colored and are laid in irregular masses of
10 to 200. Larvae are legless, about 3/8 inch long, wormlike and gray, with both
ends somewhat darker.
Life Cycle and Habits
Drain flies reproduce in polluted, shallow water or highly moist organic solids.
The eggs, larvae and pupae can be found in the muck, slime, or gelatinous film
often accumulating on the sides of drains and overflow pipes in homes, or in
sewage disposal beds, septic tanks and moist compost. They have also been found
in dirty garbage containers, rain barrels and tree holes. Eggs, which can hatch
in 32 to 48 hours at 70 degrees F, are laid in and on the moist media. Larvae
feed on the decaying organic matter, microorganisms, algae and sediment in the
media. Larvae mature in 9 to 15 days and are considered valuable organisms along
with the organic film in purifying sewage water. Larvae live in the organic
film, breathing through tubes and feeding on sediment, decaying vegetation,
along with microscopic plants and animals in filters at sewage plants. Pupae
occur in or on the surface of the breeding media and, after 20 to 40 hours, new
adults emerge.
The life cycle can be completed in one to three weeks. Adults live about two
weeks, with old ones dying and new ones emerging. They feed on flower nectar and
polluted water. During the day, adults rest in shaded areas or on walls near
plumbing fixtures and on the sides of showers and tubs. Most activity occurs
during the evening when these flies are seen hovering about drains and sinks.
They may breed in large numbers at sewage filter plants and then may be carried
by prevailing wind to nearby homes up to a mile away. Adults are small enough to
pass through ordinary window screening.
Control Measures
Drain flies do not bite humans but may become a nuisance by their presence in
large populations. Sometimes it takes persistent effort to eradicate an
infestation in the home. Concentrate on eliminating larval breeding sites from
drains in floors, sinks, wash basins, bathtubs, etc. Sometimes the source of the
problem is a nearby filter plant.
Prevention / Removal
To detect if flies are indeed coming from a drain, one needs to cover the
opening during a down time with a series of glue boards. Keep the glue boards
from adhering to the floor by making a small collar for the drains. Use some
heavy cardboard and form it into a circle slightly larger than the drain cover
(1 inch tall). Leave in place overnight or for a few days to catch flies. Also,
tap loose ceramic floor tile with a broom handle in a wet room near the drain.
Lift, clean and re-cement tiles.

(ICR) which prevents the larvae from ever becoming adults. No adults, no problem.
GENTROL can be applied in food serving
areas, bars, drains, restrooms, kitchens and other areas where flies breed. Here are some tips on how to use GENTROL IGR
effectively.
1. For drain flies, treat the drains in the kitchen, restrooms, and any other drains where food material can accumulate.
To treat drains, remove the top screen if possible and treat the catch basin and the entire drainpipe to the waterline. Be
sure to treat the entire surface of the pipe. Apply GENTROL once a week for a month and then drop back to every 2-4 weeks
depending on the amount of flies that are seen. In drain areas that receive a lot of water due to intensive cleaning, more
frequent applications may be needed.
2. The best time to treat is after closing and after all the cleaning has been
done. Let the GENTROL application be the last thing you do before you leave for the night. For those places that never close,

Alternative suggestions include cleaning pipes and traps with a good, stiff,
long-handled brush. It is best to remove the drain trap and use a "snake" in
clogged drains to clean the pipes of all gelatinous material. If using
mechanical means, flush lines with boiling water and bleach to remove any
material left behind by the cleaning process. Caustic drain cleaners may also be
used, although they are not as effective as other means and must NEVER be
followed with bleach since Chlorine gas can be released if the two mix in the
drain line.
Clean dirty garbage containers, wet lint under the washing machine, and even
standing water in containers under houseplant pots. Outside the home, inspect
air conditioners, bird baths, shallow stagnant pools of water and sewage
treatment facilities upwind as adult flies will travel with the wind.
Cluster Flies
Cluster flies resemble house flies in appearance (slightly larger) and are often a problem in both spring and fall seasons. Cluster flies enter houses, or other shelters, in the fall. The flies tend to cluster in large numbers at windows, ceiling or other high places. Adults feed on nectar while the larvae, or maggots, are internal parasites of earthworms. When crushed, they leave a greasy spot on upholstery, carpets, and wood surfaces.
What are normally grouped as cluster flies are actually three groups of flies: cluster flies (Pollenia rudis),face flies ( Musca autumnalis, and blow flies (Phormia sp; Lucilia sp.) The adult cluster fly emerges in late summer and early fall and seek protected places to spend the winter. In many cases, this is within the walls, attics and basements of homes. Window screens offer no protection from the flies because they crawl in the home through small openings in the walls of the building. These same overwintering flies get into rooms during the winter and spring months entering through window pulley holes, around the baseboards and through other small openings in walls.
Blue or green bottle flies are robust flies with shiny metallic bodies that can often be found in homes during winter and early spring. These insects develop in manure or carrion and are usually apparent in small numbers. However, they are strong fliers and are attracted to lamps or lights.
Cluster Fly Control
Cluster flies, face flies and blow flies are difficult to control once they have gained access to homes because they hibernate in wall voids and other inaccessible places. Problems are common around well cared for lawns that support a healthy earthworm population. They can also be a nuisance in buildings surrounded by rich pasture land and turf.
The first step to control cluster flies is to treat the exterior of your home with Demon WP. Application should be made in the first two weeks of August if practical. It may be more effective to concentrate the chemical on the sunny side of the house. These walls are warmer and generally attract more flies. Spray the exterior as a residual surface treatment.
To kill the flies that buzz about rooms, use CB80, a pyrethrin aerosol. You will obtain best results if the room is closed and the aerosol is misted into the air. Pyrethrins are "quick kill" insecticides and have little or residual action.

DO NOT USE ON HORSES INTENDED FOR SLAUGHTER
HORSES AND PONIES: To repel and kill Horn Flies, Stable Flies, House Flies, Horse Flies, Deer Flies, Mosquitoes and Gnats, apply EQUISECT Fly Repellent as directed below.
As a Spray: Remove excess dirt and dust. Apply a light spray mist sufficient to wet the surface of the hair while brushing lightly against the lay of the hair. Avoid spraying in eyes and mucous membranes. Apply with a sponge or soft cloth to these areas.
As a Wipe-On: Thoroughly brush horse to remove dirt and dust. Extremely dirty horses should be shampooed, rinsed and allowed to dry before applying. Use a sponge or clean soft cloth. Apply EQUISECT Fly Repellent liberally over areas to be protected. Pay special attention to legs, belly, shoulders, neck and facial areas. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes. Repeat treatment daily or at intervals necessary to give continued protection. To control blood-sucking lice apply EQUISECT Fly Repellent to the infested areas of the animal using a stiff brush to get the spray to the base of the hair. Repeat every 2 to 3 weeks if required.
DOGS AND CATS: To control fleas and ticks on dogs and cats, apply EQUISECT Fly Repellent starting at the animal’s head (avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth as you spray). Make sure the entire body is covered, including the legs, underbody and tail. While spraying, fluff the hair so that the spray will penetrate to the skin. Make sure spray wets the animal thoroughly. Avoid contact with genitalia. Repeat treatment daily. Do not use on dogs and cats under 12 weeks of age. Wash hands with soap and water after use. Shake well before using. To protect horses from horse flies, house flies, stable
flies, face flies, horn flies, deer flies, gnats, mosquitoes, lice and deer ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease: Thoroughly brush the horse's coat prior to application to remove loose dirt and debris. Also, reapply each time animal is washed or exposed to heavy rain.
Most of our customers tell us that Tri-Tec14 is great for controling flies and other insects for dogs. However we can not recommend it, because it is not listed on the label.
